Internships

Since 1990, our firm has continuously maintained an internship program that has provided practical training for more than 90 student lawyers from several European nations. It has been a source of mutual learning among European and American jurists as well as a foundation for ongoing professional cooperation and lasting transatlantic friendship.

Our practical training is for a period of twelve continuous weeks. Interns’ working days are from 9 AM to 5 PM. Each intern has his/her own desk and computer and receives a personal docket of cases in addition to assisting in the general caseload. Our interns attend client meetings, draft agreements from different areas of law and assist in dispute resolution as well as the founding and structuring of companies. Although interns will have the opportunity to use and possibly improve their use of business and legal English, because of the fact that we represent many clients throughout Europe, fluency in one or more languages in addition to English is a great asset to us.

The objective of the program is to provide a meaningful international training experience in a professional field. Our interns' scope of duties reflect our law firm's areas of practice.  Fredricks & von der Horst is specialized in international business and commercial law. We frequently assist European companies in finding and conducting the right Market Entry strategies in the US.  Additionally our law firm focuses on intellectual property, media and entertainment law.

We receive a large number of applications and we have workstations and cases for only 1-2 interns at one time. We generally process applications 12 to 14 months in advance of the internship term, and for this reason, we ask applicants to apply for their time of choice as early as possible. However, sometimes we can accept interns on short notice.

By tax treaty between the United States and other countries, we may not pay any form of wage or salary to visiting interns. We maintain an updated housing list of furnished rooms in the general area of our office if you need assistance to locate a dwelling for the term of your internship.

Since 2001, Mr. Fredricks has conducted a series of seminars, featuring various specialized speakers, for members of the diplomatic missions in Los Angeles focusing on issues of comparative law and taxation between the US and European jurisdictions, which also our interns attend. In many cases our interns have the chance to attend external seminars, e.g. from the Beverly Hills Bar Association, and join cultural events.

We are looking forward to cooperate with you!
